5 Minute Mirror Inspection Checklist
Looking after your vehicle is an important part of owning it. For commercial vehicles in New Zealand, having mirrors isn't just for convenience, it's a legal requirement. By regularly checking your vehicle, you can save yourself not only time due to having a vehicle that is no longer safe to drive, but also money by avoiding costly breakdowns and delays.
We have put together a handy checklist for you to check over your vehicle mirrors to ensure they are in driveable condition or to do before your next COF/WOF inspection:
1: Mount Stability - Start off by checking the mount to which your mirror is connected to your vehicle. Hold the mirror housing and move it gently. If the mount is good it should feel firm and stable, not sag or drop out of position and not vibrate excessively.
2: Glass Clarity - Now that you know the mirror isn't going anywhere, check that the glass is in perfect condition. Any cracks or chips can distort your vision when driving and can be dangerous in bad weather conditions. Broken glass can also be a first aid hazard. Also be sure to check for any clouding or "ghosting" on the mirrors. If the housing is intact, replacing just the glass can be a cost-effective solution.
3: Adjustment Range - Sit in the drivers seat and ensure both mirrors are able to be moved side to side smoothly, so the driver is able to see behind them and both sides, with minimal blind spots.
4: Heating Function - If your mirror is electric or heated it is good to check that these elements are working properly. Test the heat function is working adequately, as the last thing you want on a cold winter morning is a iced over mirror that you can't see out of.
And there you have it! Our 5 Minute Mirror Inspection Checklist, created to keep you safe out there on the road.
