Globe keep blowing?
We know how frustrating it can be when you think you've figured out what is wrong with your vehicle, just for it to break all over again. A common issue we see is lights being replaced when the issue isn't the complete light but the globe itself. This mistake can be a costly one, so we have put together a quick guide to help you figure out whether you need to replace the complete light, or just the globe.
Voltage Spike:
The most common issue in commercial vehicles is a voltage spike. This is when the globe receives more voltage than it is designed for. This causes the filament to overheat and burn out too quickly.
Things that may cause voltage fluctuations:
- Faulty alternators
- Voltage regulators not working as they should
- Electrical surges when starting the vehicle
Signs that this may be the issue:
- After replacing the globe, it blows very shortly after
- Multiple bulbs blowing, usually all around the same time
- The lights may seem unusually bright before they blow
Poor Ground Connection
When the ground/earth connection is poor, this can cause inconsistent electrical flow. This then creates instability in the heat and voltage which will end up shortening the life of your globe.
Signs this may be the issue:
- The lights dim or flicker
- Globe life is inconsistent
- Lights work intermittently
Vibration
Commercial vehicles experience a lot of vibration which can have a negative impact on your globes. This is because the filament inside the globe is very delicate, and when there is a lot of vibration it can snap the filament.
Signs this may be the issue:
- Bulbs blow when on rough roads
- Headlights & trailer lights failing too quickly
Moisture
Damage and corrosion to the globe can be caused by moisture or condensation inside the light unit.
Signs this may be the issue:
- Foggy lenses
- Visible condensation
- Corrosion inside the housing
Incorrect Globe Type
This is when the wrong type of bulb has been used, including incorrect wattage, voltage rating or cheap low quality bulbs are used.
Signs this may be the issue:
- Lights are extremely hot
- Lights are blowing way too quickly
So now you may know the issue that is causing your globe to blow quickly, but what can you do to prevent it?
Voltage spikes = check vehicle charging system & alternator output voltage
Ground connection = clean earth connections & tighten mounting points
Vibration = replace worn brackets & consider LED replacement if available
Moisture = replace cracked lenses & check seals
Globe Type - Ensure correct globe rating is installed & use quality commercial grade bulbs
Rule to remember - if you replace a globe more than twice in a short period of time, check the above issues to ensure there isn't something else causing your globes to keep blowing.
By fixing the underlying issue, this will not only save you money but time & repeated replacements, getting you and your vehicle back out on the road sooner.
